Apples of Gold in Settings of Silver

Rabbit Brush and Shadows, 6x6

This is the 6" x 6" plein air study I used to produce the larger 18" x 24" studio painting of the same name, Rabbit Brush and Shadows. (I think I should change the title to Footprints in the Snow). I've made a decision this year to paint only plein air or at least from life when indoors, and to use those small studies for larger studio paintings. No more photographs for me.

I've used photos for a long time as well as painted from life. I know the painting from life has helped me tremendously to interpret those photos. Most of the artists I know personally paint from photos and will continue to do so. But for me, it's time to go with the life experience. I've found it challenging largely because of our weather, (it's snowing right now), and having made this decision in the winter I've had mostly snow scenes to paint.

Of course I could set up some still lifes in the studio and probably will since the beautiful weather doesn't really happen here until about mid May.

Oh, and I'm pleased to tell you that the larger painting of "Rabbit Brush and Shadows" will be in a show at a local venue here in Casper in a couple of weeks, along with 2 smaller pieces. I'll also be doing a quick draw at the show. Wish me luck!
