Hi Subscriber,
I hope you're off to a great start to Thanksgiving week!
Can you believe it's almost Thanksgiving? Seems impossible to me.
This email is a little different. There isn't a painting or sketch in it. It's a peak into the background music of my day in the studio, you might say.
Lots of artists listen to music while in the studio and I've taken to listening to more music than I used to while I'm in here. Sometimes it makes me want to dance, which means I have to take a break from brush or pastel for a minute or two.
Like today I've been dancing around the studio all morning listening to music I grew up with. Normally, I listen to music by more contemporary artists. So, how come these old songs?
My kids gifted me a StoryWorth account last year. Every week there's a question to answer about the past.
The idea being they'll know some things about me they didn't already know. Or wouldn't have known otherwise.
This last week's one was about music. What song always brings back a particular memory when you hear it?
It took me a little while to think about this. And then, I could see my brothers and myself listening to the songs of our parents, in the dining room, laying on the floor coloring, by the stereo.
As for which brings back most of this memory, it's a toss up between Mambo Italiano (Rosemary Clooney) and Mamma Look a Boo Boo Day (Harry Belafonte Live at Carnegie Hall). Of course it got me wondering how many other people grew up with these songs.
There must have been many because Mambo Italiano was the number one song in 1955. And I'm sure the recording of the live concert at Carnegie Hall was very popular too.
I've attached them so you can give a listen if you want. Mamma Look a Boo Boo isn't the live recording, which I highly recommend, but you'll get the idea.
Mambo Italiano is the same recording we listened to as far as I can tell. What does this have to do with Thanksgiving?
I'm not sure, maybe nothing, but I do know I appreciate you being a part of my life now, just like these old songs were part of my life back then. I love sharing this journey with you and you with me.
Did you grow up with these songs? If not, what songs do you remember from your growing up years?
