Speaking of doing things you love, would you like to learn more about color and how to use it effectively in painting? I remember the evening I nervously made a phone call to an artist whose work I greatly admired and asked if he would help me with my painting.

I was nervous, but he was kind. He asked me what I thought I needed to learn more about. When I explained that I didn't understand color at all, he asked a few more questions.

In response to his questions all I could tell him was that sometimes a painting would work out beautifully color-wise, but most of the time it didn't.

When it did work out, I had no idea how I had managed that. I wanted to learn how to make color work.

That was the beginning of my dive into learning more about color. There is so much to learn!

How do different colors work together or against each other? How do I mix what I want? How do I get color harmony?

I had excelled in my college color theory class, but never understood the logistics behind the assignments. Following directions was one thing, understanding why those were the directions was another.

How do you make cold snow look white and yet sunny? How do you make sunny places and shadow places on that snow, that you can FEEL the warmth of the sun and the coolness of the shadow?

Or how do you get cool shadows on a hot, and dusty dirt road, like in this pastel painting?

Or how do you make a thousand shades of green in such a way that it isn't boring? This is especially good to learn if you're painting outside at the beginning of the summer!

I'll be teaching a one day color class in Cody, WY on May 4, at the Cody Country Art League. We'll learn how to do the things I talked about, and more, in this fun and hands on color class that will transform your paintings.

No matter the medium you use, the principles are the same. And you'll come away with assignments you can practice at home so it becomes easier.

I'll also be teaching a plein air workshop in Cody, a month later, June 7th and 8th. This color class would be a fantastic preparatory class for the plein air workshop!
