Hi Subscriber, I hope you're having a wonderful day doing something you love! Have you ever gotten an idea, or something you saw, stuck in your mind that just won’t let you alone? You find yourself thinking about it when you’re doing things like washing dishes or driving. You find yourself actually dreaming about it at night even. That’s what happened to me a while ago when I was going through some of my reference photos. This image just would not let me go! It’s not a spectacular scene, but as I was about to go on by it wouldn’t let me.

Those uneven fence posts and scraggly brush against the snow left in this shaggy corner of a field were captivating. Thinking it was something that ought to be explored I did a few little value sketches of it. One thing led to another and before long there were many value sketches of it. |
Zeroing in on the particulars that grabbed me, there seemed to be so many possibilities. Is it the fence post or the branches? The sun or the grass? What parts are the haunting pieces that won’t leave me alone?
After my first color study I realized I was more interested in the fence and field than the road. I think it could actually be two paintings, one of the road and shadows and one of the other side of the fence mainly. |
This is the first try of the scene. It’s gouache on paper, six inches by eight inches. I like it, but not sure it’s the one I’m after.

The warm light on the corner of that field and the reaching branches coming across from the front are closer to what I want. I’ve got one more version I want to try in gouache before I do a study in oil.
It feels like an exciting adventure to get ready for, as I think about going larger with this. There will be stops along the way and things to overcome that can only be generally anticipated at this point.
Just like planning for a trip, you just don’t know what you’ll run into until you get there. This is just the beginning of the journey to make this painting come to life. I hope you’ll come along and enjoy it too. As always, I welcome your feedback. I'd love to hear which version you like best and why, if you would like to tell me! Take care,
