Good morning Subscriber!
I hope you're having a fantastic day and looking forward to Thanksgiving in a few days.
I've been remembering my first Thanksgiving after my move to Wyoming, that actually didn't happen in Wyoming.
My first autumn here was glorious. Unlike New Hampshire, the main color was yellow, but there were so many sunny days I didn’t mind a bit.
However, one day it rained and I realized how much I missed the rain. It was wonderful to hear that refreshing pitter patter! It was a day to sit and read a book, savoring the cozy feeling of being quiet and dry inside.
It called to mind many rainy days back home. Wyoming wasn’t quite home yet, no matter how much I loved it.
To my surprise one day my boss asked me if I’d like to go home for Thanksgiving. It had never occurred to me to do that! Overwhelmed with his generosity and excited at the prospect of surprising everyone at home made me want to giggle. The idea of flying made it even more of an adventure.
The look on my Mom’s face when she saw me walk into the kitchen the day before Thanksgiving was, as they say, priceless! She was so surprised and I was so happy to be the reason for the delight on her face.
Being home with my two brothers and parents was a ball. Christmas presents were bought on a shopping trip to Brattleboro and celebrations were enjoyed before returning to Wyoming.
There were some tears too when it was time to leave. Those were tough days. I didn’t want to make my parents sad, or be disappointing by leaving. But I didn’t want to stay. We hadn’t been very good at expressing our affection for each other and I don’t think we knew how to do it then either.
I left with conflicting feelings, but relief also, to be heading back to the wide open spaces where it felt like I could breathe.
